Adopting a Pet

Thank you for thinking about adopting a pet from Lost Angels Animal Rescue. Falling in love with a dog is easy, but before making a decision take a few moments to consider these questions:

  • Why would you like to adopt a pet? It's a simple question that many times folks don't ask themselves. Adopting a dog because it is cute or because the kids are begging for a puppy usually ends up being a huge mistake. Remember that dogs may be with you for up to 15+ years.
  • Do you have time for a dog? Pets require food, water, exercise, care and companionship every day of every year. Many of the dogs we rescue from shelters are there because their owners didn't realize the amount of time required to care for them.
  • Can you afford a pet? The costs of owning a dog are long term and can be high. Expenses such as regular veterinary care, training classes, food, toys, and grooming add up over time.
  • Living arrangements - can you have a pet and is there enough space? If you live in a rental community or a deed restricted subdivision, check to ensure pets are allowed and what restrictions there may be. Think about not only the size of the dog you are considering but the activity level as well. Small dogs such as terriers can be very active and may need a fair amount of regular exercise. Some larger dogs may be content to lay around and sleep all day.

Pets provide unconditional love and ask for little in return. Making the necessary commitments of time, money, responsibility and love will bring tremendous rewards and loving companionship. The fact that you are thinking of adopting from a rescue group clearly shows you are responsible and caring. Please consider the above questions carefully before making your decision. Your dog will love you for it.

Adoption Process

Lost Angels does not have a shelter facility that can be visited by the general public. All dogs are cared for by foster families until adopted. Each foster will make every effort to work with you (Sunday through Friday), as follows:

1. View our list of adoptable dogs. By clicking on the dog, you can read his/her bio to provide you with important information (i.e., age, weight, breed, etc.) along with the contact information for the foster who is caring for the dog.

2. Contact the foster parent to further discuss the dog's personality and habits to help determine if he/she is best suited for your family and home environment.

3. If the match seems right, the foster parent will invite you to submit an application online for further approval, after which you will be invited to meet the dog.

4. Prior to final approval the foster parent may request a home visit.

SATURDAY ADOPTIONS:  Adoptable dogs are shown each Saturday at Petco in Carrollwood from 10:00am to 2:00pm based on foster parent's availability.  This is an open forum and everyone is welcome to stop by and meet our team, visit with our dogs and apply to adopt while onsite.  Please be advised that not all dogs are present at our showings and you should contact the foster parent in advance to ensure that a particular dog will be present.
